International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against women. The date, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, was chosen in memory of the brutal murder of the three Mirabal sisters, during the Dominican regime of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, in 1960. According to Istat data, one in three women, aged 16 to 70 years, has been victim of violence and in 63% of cases, children witnessed the violence; the most numerous to be affected are younger women, between the 16 and 24 years; it also shows that the main causes of aggression are partners. Violence hurts the body and soul of the sufferer, but in almost all cases, it's not even reported: 96% of women don't talk to anyone. On the occasion of 25 November, the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appealed to young people to act in order to to curb this social evil. He then recalled how violence against women, which manifests itself in various forms, is one of the most significant obstacles to full equality of the sexes.

La data, stabilita dall’Assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite nel 1999, fu scelta in ricordo del brutale assassinio delle tre sorelle Mirabal, durante il regime domenicano di Rafael Leònidas Trujillo, nel 1960.
